Divine Heresy: Bleed the fifth
24/07/07 || Euthanatos
This is yet another band from Dino Cazares, that fat fuck of Fear Factory fame. For the record, I hate Fear Factory and the only thing Cazares has ever released that has been remotely interesting is Brujeria. The rest is all pure crap to my ears.
With that said, Dino finally impresses me with “Bleed the Fifth”. First of all, he was smart enough to enlist Tim Yeung for the drums. Yeung has hammered the bongos in bands like Vital Remains, All That Remains and Hate Eternal, and his talent is matched by few. The other member of this trio is Tommy Vext, whom I’ve never heard of before. No matter, since Vext is one of the shining gems of this album.
I really like everything that’s going on here. The guitar sound is surprisingly in very good taste, there are some killer riffs everywhere, which is also making me believe the world is coming to an end. The drumming is top-notch, double-bass perfection and even a blast-beat here and there.
And like I mentioned, Tommy Vext is the shit. It’s uncanny that this guy is unknown, because he is a true talent; going from perfectly clear screams (that means you can actually understand what he’s saying even though he’s screaming his lungs off) to finely tuned clean vocals, Vext is your all-around powerhouse of a vocalist. If I’m starting a band, this is the guy I want.
Concerning the sound portrayed here, it lies somewhere in the metalcore/modern American metal ranks. That may sway a few of you off, but really, it’s a breath of fresh air in such a polluted environment. There’s a solid death/thrash influence here, so that’s cool.
Finally bringing something new to the table, Dino Cazares may have just made his best album ever.
The cover: It’s a skull. Yeah.
7 gonads and strife out of 10.
